To the unknown to the general public in our country, a tycoon of Greek origin George Mitchell, and the dream of the second generation immigrant for a social, sustainable city is mentioned by the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in its tribute.

George Mitchell was born in 1919 in Galveston, Texas.

“Mitchell founded it woodlands community, north of Houston, in the mid-1970s on 117 square kilometers of forest land that he purchased. His goal was to create a form of settlement there, which is in harmony with nature.”

As the publication characteristically mentions about the hydrocarbon billionaire, “in the US, origin plays a smaller role in the path one will take in life compared to other countries.”

“Mitchell’s father (Savvas Paraskevopoulos) he immigrated to the US, being a poor, illiterate shepherd in Greece. His family, which had settled in Galveston, south of Houston, was constantly faced with financial problems. (…) George Mitchell became an energy magnate, a billionaire and one of America’s greatest philanthropists. And there was little evidence at the time that it would also develop into a pioneer in sustainability issues,” the newspaper writes.

In 2004, Forbes magazine estimated his fortune at 1.6 billion dollars, ranking him among the 500 richest people in the world.

According to the Economist, “few entrepreneurs have done as much to change the world as George Mitchell”:

“The rise (in shale gas exploitation) has been helped by a number of factors… But the biggest difference is due to the efforts of one man: George Mitchell… who saw the potential of improving a known technology, fracking, to access the fields gas. Major oil and gas companies were interested in shale gas, but were unable to make the breakthrough in fracking to exploit the gas. Mr. Mitchell spent ten years and $6 million to solve the problem…. Everyone, he said, told him he was just wasting his time and money.”

Mitchell died at the age of 94 on July 26, 2013, at his home in Galveston of natural causes.
