Foreign Minister Analena Burbock on Friday defended the administration’s plan to reduce state guarantees to companies investing in China, stressing that economic dependence on Beijing must be reduced.

In the case of natural gas imports from Russia, “we couldn’t say, ‘tomorrow we’re cutting it off,’ because that way we wouldn’t be able to secure Germany’s energy supply,” the minister explained, referring to the draft “Strategy for China” prepared by her ministry. As he said, however, both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economy came to the conclusion that, in view of the approval of guarantees for a German investment, even the worst case scenario should be taken into account. “It’s about taxpayers’ money,” he said.
