Sacatecas is among the states facing the most acute problems due to the wave of violence attributed to warring drug cartels.

A judge succumbed yesterday Sunday to the injuries he suffered when he was attacked with a firearm in the state of Zacatecas (north), said sources close to the authorities of this Mexican state, which is among the hardest hit by the wave of violence in the country.

Judge Roberto Elias was found by police injured in his car and taken to a hospital in serious condition, the state security secretariat told Reuters news agency.

He surrendered a few hours later, according to a source close to state authorities and social media posts by Arturo Nale, the head of the state judiciary.

Mr. Nale called for measures to restore peace in Sakatekas.

Sacatecas is among the states facing the most acute problems due to the wave of violence attributed to warring drug cartels. Last year, it recorded 1,050 murders, about 200 more than in 2020.

The commander of the National Guard in the state, General Jose Silvestre Ursua, was killed in late November in a battle with thugs, authorities said.
