Drivers and other paramedics working for Britain’s ambulance services at midday became the latest sector of workers in the country to go on strike just before and just after Christmas.
More than 10,000 drivers, paramedics, emergency nurses and administrative staff across nine NHS regional authorities in England and Wales will be off duty on December 21 and 28.
Depending on the region, the strikes will last from 12 to 24 hours.
Due to already very long delays in ambulance response times, the government is considering filling the additional gaps that will arise by deploying soldiers in the drivers’ seats.
Ambulance workers become yet another category of NHS staff to go on strike in December or January, after nurses and specialist doctors.
Also under discussion are strike action in the NHS by midwives, physiotherapists, paramedics, dentists, psychologists, psychotherapists, optometrists, audiologists, cleaners, technical support staff and administrative staff.
