After the Financial Times, the Ukrainian president who embodied his country’s resistance to the Russian invasion was named the American magazine’s “Person of the Year” for 2022.

After Volodymyr Zelensky was named “Person of the Year” for 2022 by the Financial Times, the Ukrainian president received the same title today from the prestigious TIME magazine.

Zelensky, who embodied his country’s resistance to the Russian invasion, was named “Person of the Year” for 2022 by the American magazine, which paid tribute to the “spirit of Ukraine”.

“Whether the battle over Ukraine inspires hope or fear, Volodymyr Zelensky steeled the world in a way we haven’t seen in decades,” wrote Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal, for whom this year’s choice “has never been so clear.”

“Because they proved that courage can be as contagious as fear, because they moved people and nations to unite in defense of freedom, because they reminded the world of the fragility of democracy – and peace – 44-year-old former comedian Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian spirit is TIME’s 2022 “Person of the Year,” the magazine added.

“In the weeks following the start of the Russian bombing on February 24, his decision not to leave Kyiv, but to stay and gather support was critical. From his first 40-second Instagram post on February 25 — which showed that the cabinet and civil society remained intact and in place — to his daily speeches delivered remotely to institutions such as parliaments, the World Bank and the Grammy Awards, the president of Ukraine was everywhere,” said the Time editor-in-chief.

In 2021, the magazine awarded the title, which it has awarded every year since 1927, to Elon Musk, boss of SpaceX and Tesla, who this year bought Twitter.
