The president of the Congress invited the vice president of the country, Dina Boluarte, in order to swear her in as the president of Peru tonight.
Earlier, it caused a great stir the televised speech of President Pedro Castillo, who announced the dissolution of Congress – a few hours before the start of his third impeachment attempt with the question of impeachment – and the appointment of an “emergency government”, underlining that he will respect the current economic policy in the period until parliamentary elections are held.
At the same time, he added that a curfew is in effect from 10 in the evening until 4 in the morning, throughout the territory of Peru.
Castillo also announced that he would convene “as soon as possible” a new Constituent Congress which would undertake to create a new Constitution within a period not to exceed nine months.
Until the new parliament is restored, “the government will rule by decree,” Castillo continued.
“The judicial system, the judiciary, the prosecution, the national council of justice, the constitutional court are declared in a state of reorganization,” he added, asking those in possession of illegal weapons “to hand them over to the national police within 72 hours.”
The national police “will focus all its efforts on the real and effective fight against crime, corruption and drug trafficking, for this it will be given the necessary resources”, he continued, calling on civil society “to support these decisions that will allow us to put our country on the path of development”.
The reaction of the president of the Constitutional Court was immediate, who described “coup” what Castillo announced and called on Congress to hand over power to Vice President Dina Boluarte. “It’s a coup doomed to failure, Peru wants to live in a democracy,” Constitutional Court President Francisco Morales told RPP radio station.
There are also six investigations pending against Pedro Castillo for various corruption cases, in which his associates and members of his family are accused. He denounces a politically motivated campaign against him, while he enjoys immunity until the end of his presidential term in July 2026.
