The largest bookstore in Europe, specialized in Middle Eastern books, Al Saqi Booksin London will close due to rising prices of Arabic books and because Brexit was “harmful” to the business.
Al Saqi Books in west London opened in 1978 and sold books on the Middle East and North Africa in English and on all subjects in Arabic.
His recent best-selling titles, according to his website, included Asmahan Barwani’s Bread and Salt cookbook, in Kurdish and English, and Classical Poems by Arab Women, a bilingual book in English and Arabic.
The store will close on December 31 this year, with bookstore manager Salwa Gaspard saying, according to the Guardian, that it was a “difficult decision that had to be made due to recent economic challenges, such as increases in the price of Arabic books.”
Al Saqi Books was founded by Andre and Salva Gaspard and the late May Wesoub, three friends who had settled in London from war-torn Lebanon.
