“This is not an isolated incident,” according to the organization Transparency International about the dispute case that came to light
The operation of the Belgian police in the European Parliament for the case of corruption in relation to Qatar is causing strong reactions in Brussels, where MEPs and non-governmental organizations are asking for an urgent debate to improve the functioning of the rules of ethics in this great institution of the European Union.
“This is not an isolated incident.”, according to Transparency International. “For many decades now, Parliament has allowed the development of one culture of impunity (…) and an absolute absence of independent moral control”.
This control is “defective” in the institution (European Parliament), Alberto Alemanno, Professor of Law at the College de l’Europe in Bruges, wrote on Twitter.
The Euro Quatari scandal opens multiple Pandora’s boxes all at once:
– flawed EU ethics system for MEPs (#Kaili)
– absence of post mandate rules for MEPs (#panzeri)
– scale of foreign influence over EU (#qatar)
– #Qatar2022 tainted by corruption https://t.co/A15mf9Uztf— Alberto Alemanno (@alemannoEU) December 9, 2022
Earlier, French MEP Manon Aubry (radical left) denounced “Qatar’s aggressive lobbying” and asked for a debate on the issue next week in Strasbourg, where the Plenary of the European Parliament meets.
“We will do everything possible to cooperate with justice,” European Parliament President Roberta Metzola tweeted.
Our @Europarl_EN stands firmly against corruption.
At this stage, we cannot comment on any ongoing investigations except to confirm that we have & will cooperate fully with all relevant law enforcement & judicial authorities.
We’ll do all we can to assist the course of justice.
