Josep Borel: Calls on Kosovo and Serbia to de-escalate after the latest conflicts

by

In recent weeks, Serbs in northern Kosovo have responded with violent resistance to moves by Pristina that they see as anti-Serb.

Kosovo and Serbia must de-escalate the tense situation in the region, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said today, after Serbian protesters in northern Kosovo blocked main roads yesterday, Sunday, for the second day.

In recent weeks, Serbs in northern Kosovo have responded with violent resistance to moves by Pristinaa which they consider anti-Serbian.

“I know both sides are willing to de-escalate and I urge both of them to do so,” Borrell said upon his arrival at a meeting of EU foreign ministers. “They must return to dialogue, they must overcome this tendency to fight in the street”.

The latest protests were sparked by the arrest, on Saturday, of a former police officer. He and several others resigned from the police force last month after Pristina announced it would require Serbs to change their vehicle number plates, which date back to before the 1998-99 Kosovo war.

For a second day yesterday, Sunday, trucks and other heavy vehicles blocked main roads leading to two border crossing points to Serbia, closing both to traffic.

EULEX, the EU mission patrolling northern Kosovo, said a flash bomb was fired at one of its armored vehicles on Saturday night, but there were no injuries.

Borrell said this was unacceptable.
