“We are seeking further information from the Government of Nigeria and stakeholders working in this area, among others,” a State Department spokesman said in an email.
The State Department has expressed “deep concern” over reports by Reuters that the Nigerian military has killed children in its fight against insurgents and has raised the matter with the Nigerian government, a spokesman said today.
Nigerian military leaders told Reuters the military had never targeted children to kill them. They said the information contained in the article was an insult to Nigerians and was part of an attempt from abroad to undermine the country’s fight against insurgents.
“We are seeking further information from the Government of Nigeria and stakeholders working in this area, among others,” a State Department spokesman said in an email.
“We are still evaluating the information and will make decisions on next steps thereafter. Our Embassy in Abuja is seeking additional information, including speaking with the Nigerian authorities.”
Reuters reports that deliberate killings of children have taken place across northeastern Nigeria, where the military has been battling Islamist extremists for 13 years.
