The political leadership of Kosovo signed today the official request for joining the European Union, which will be delivered tomorrow, December 15, to the Czech Republic, the country holding the presidency of the European Union this semester.

The relevant document was signed, in a special ceremony held in Pristina, by the President of Kosovo Viosa Osmani, the Speaker of the Parliament Glauk Koniufc and the Prime Minister Albin Kurti. President Viosa Osmani described the signing of the application for EU membership as “historic”. “We are taking a decisive step towards realizing our collective dream,” Osmani said, adding that Kosovo’s European ambitions are beginning to be fulfilled.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 after being placed under UN administration in 1999 following NATO intervention. Five EU member states do not recognize Kosovo as an independent state, and it has failed to become a member of the UN.
