Peru’s government today declared a 30-day state of emergency across the country in an attempt to quell sporadic protests by supporters of former president Pedro Castillo.
The country’s declaration of a state of emergency, announced by Defense Minister Alberto Otarola, will allow the deployment of the military to restore public order.

Peruvian prosecutors have requested that he be remanded in custody for 18 months the former president, who is accused of “posturing” and “conspiracy” and was taken into custody after his failed attempt to dissolve Congress in December 7.
Faced with a wave of protests and riots, the new president of Peru Dina Boluarte appealed for calm and promised to bring up the next election scheduled for 2026 by two years.
