Donetsk: At least nine injured in Ukrainian shelling, say pro-Russian authorities

At least nine civilians were injured today from the shelling of Donetsk, a stronghold of pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, pro-Russian authorities announcedwhich claim that this is “the most massive attack” that Ukrainian forces have carried out in the city since 2014.

According to Alexei Kulemzin, the Russian-backed mayor of Donetsk, Ukrainian troops fired 40 “BM-21 Grad” rockets at the city. According to Reuters, Kulemzin he spoke of a war crime.

“At exactly 7:00 this morning they carried out the most massive attack against the center of Donetsk since 2014”, the year the city came under the control of Russian separatists, triggering a conflict with Kyiv. Kulemzin wrote on the Telegram app.

According to him, the rockets hit apartment buildings, offices, a church, a school and a stadium.

He also reported shelling of Donetsk by Ukrainian forces with 155 mm shells.

The pro-Russian official released photos showing several damaged areas and buildings on fire with fire engines.

Kulemzin spoke of at least six wounded, while the Donetsk territorial defense announced that there were nine wounded, including a child.

The city of Donetsk has been the target of deadly Ukrainian fire in recent weeks. By early December, at least six people had been killed in such strikes, according to local pro-Russian authorities.

The head of the Ukrainian military command of the Donetsk region, Pavlo Kirilenko, reported today for his part that two people were killed and four were wounded by Russian shelling in the zones under the control of Kiev near Donetsk.
