They are demanding a salary increase in line with inflation, which is around 11%
London, Thanasis Gavos
Tens of thousands of nurses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have gone on strike today for the first time in their 106-year union history.
They claim a salary increase in line with inflation, which is around 11%. The strike follows the collapse of talks with the government to prevent it. Members of NHS nursing staff are taking part in picketing outside hospitals.
Although hospitals are staffed with emergency nursing staff, neonatal units, pediatric intensive care units and chemotherapy services, thousands of medical appointments and operations have been cancelled.
Some mental health, learning disability and autism hospital areas are also excluded from the mobilization.
The nursing staff has announced a second strike for the 20th of the month.
Nurses are just one of many sectors of workers to strike during December and the holiday season. Among others, workers have carried out or will carry out strikes on the railways, the national road network, ambulances and buses.
