A huge aquarium in a Berlin hotel exploded early this morning and 100 firefighters have rushed to the scene, emergency services said.

“In addition to the incredible damage (…) two people were injured by broken glass,” Berlin police said on Twitter.

“The aquarium has been damaged, there is a water leak. The situation is not clear at the moment,” the fire department of the German capital had written earlier on the same social media.

According to the website of the DomAquaree complex, which includes a Radisson hotel, a museum, shops and restaurants, this aquarium is the largest freestanding, cylindrical aquarium in the world, standing 16 meters high and containing one million liters of water and 1,500 exotic fish .

The complex is located in Berlin’s tourist district of Mitte, and emergency services have closed a major road in front of the complex leading from Alexanderplatz to the Brandenburg Gate due to the large amount of water that has spilled from the building.

The road and sidewalk are littered with debris.

Buses have been sent to the complex to offer shelter to hotel residents leaving the building, police said on Twitter, as the temperature in Berlin hovers around 7 degrees below zero.
