Bulgaria and Greece are facing common challenges, Radev said.
President Roumen Radev today awarded the Order of Knight of Mandara, First Class, to the ambassador of Greece in Sofia, Dimitrios Chronopoulos, for his contribution to the development and deepening of bilateral relations.
President Radev said: “Today we can easily say that these relations are strategic, that the two countries and the two peoples on the Balkan Peninsula have managed to turn their backs on the problems of the past and are building a fruitful cooperation based on common values, looking to the future, giving hope and setting an example that the Balkans can have peace, stability and understanding”.
“Today, we can easily say that our relations are a strategic axis of stability that opens up a perspective for our entire region,” the president said.
Radev emphasized that during his tenure, the diplomat’s proactive approach activated the dialogue at the highest political level on the resumption of old projects and the development of new ones. The president specifically mentioned the Burgas – Alexandroupoli oil pipeline, the large Sea2Sea project and Bulgaria’s participation in the management of the ports of Kavala and Alexandroupoli.
Bulgaria and Greece are facing common challenges, Radev said. “Together we protect the European Union’s largest external land border in the path of a large migratory flow. Together we can make efforts to guarantee security, peace and stability in the Balkans through exceptionally good cooperation between our armed forces in a range of from NATO exercises”.
For his part, Ambassador Chronopoulos stated that in the last three years he has focused on restoring the spirit of trust, honesty and justice in bilateral relations because he believes that friends and neighbors should speak openly. This is the only way to solve all problems and then solutions are always easy to find.
He also stated that Greek-Bulgarian relations are currently going through their most mature and productive period in modern history.
