The absolute terror was experienced on Sunday by 278 passengers and 10 crew members of Hawaiian Airlines, who took off on an Airbus from Phoenix, Arizona, bound for Hawaii.
About 30 minutes before landing in Honolulu, the plane hit turbulence so severe that at least 20 passengers were seriously injured and taken to hospital.
According to Jim Ireland, chief of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, 20 people were taken to hospitals, 11 of them in serious condition, while one passenger was taken unconscious and has not yet woken up.

Passenger Kaylee Reyes told Hawaii News Now that her mother had just gotten into her seat and hadn’t had time to fasten her seatbelt when the commotion began. “Suddenly it flew up and hit the roof of the plane.”
The weather report for that day predicted thunderstorms but would not affect the aircraft’s flight path. According to Jon Snook, Hawaiian Airlines’ flight director, this was the first time the airline had experienced “an incident of this nature in recent history.”
