“The role of the Mechanism is to intervene when natural gas prices reach unreasonable price levels. I hope it will never be activated,” said Belgian Energy Minister Tine van der Straeten
The Minister of Energy of Belgium, Tine van der Straeten, expressed her satisfaction with reaching an agreement on the Natural Gas Market Correction Mechanism.
As reported by the Belgian news agency (Belga), Van der Straten stressed that “from the beginning, we pursued the same goal: to control prices while ensuring security of supply. Today, we have achieved this goal” and added that “the Mechanism Market Correction will protect our households and industries from excessive prices, but it must be clear that it remains the ultimate safety measure and cannot be the only answer to high energy prices. The Mechanism’s role is to intervene when gas prices are reaching absurd price levels. So I hope that this mechanism will never be activated. The Mechanism works in this sense like an airbag in a car, which exists only to protect us in the event of an accident.”
Concluding, the Belgian Minister noted that “we continue to work to accelerate the energy transition with faster licensing procedures. With the necessary energy saving measures, we will be ready for next winter and overcome the energy crisis together”.
