Although Zelensky regularly travels to areas near the front, his visit to Bakhmut in the Donbass appears to be the riskiest he has made so far.
Next to the Ukrainian soldiers of Bakhmut, on the “front line” was the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, with the aim of encouraging them. Zelensky spoke of a “fortress”.
“Bakhmut Fort. Our people. Unconquered by the enemy. Who with their bravery prove that we will endure and not give up what is ours.
“Ukraine is proud of you. I’m proud of you! Thank you for the courage, endurance and strength you showed in repelling enemy attacks” adds the Ukrainian president in his message.
Although Zelensky regularly travels to areas near the front, his visit to Bakhmut, located in the Donbas region, appears to be the riskiest he has made so far.
“He met with military personnel, talked with them and awarded medals to our soldiers,” announced the Russian presidency.
From the summer the Russians are trying to occupy the city and the surrounding area, which once had 70,000 inhabitants.
Fierce fighting has been raging around the city for the past few months. Russian troops have captured villages and areas outside Bakhmut, but Ukrainian forces appear to be in control of the town and part of its surroundings.
Zelensky himself has pointed out that Buckhmut remains the “hottest spot” of the entire 1,300km front line as Russian forces relentlessly attempt to break through Ukrainian defenses in the city.
