Biden: 2015 Iran nuclear deal ‘is dead’

by

In a video circulating on Twitter that has not been denied by the White House, the American president can be seen declaring that the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program is dead

THE international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, known by the acronym JCPOA, “is dead” assures the US president Joe Biden in a video circulating on Twitter, without the White House disputing its authenticity.

This video, which is undated and does not specify where it was taken, shows Biden, surrounded by his bodyguards, talking to people behind a metal fence. A woman is seen wearing a ribbon in the colors of the Iranian flag and has her nails painted in the same colors. The space is reminiscent of a gym or a multi-purpose event space.

The decor and the president’s clothes refer to a campaign event that took place in early November in California, when Joe Biden went to that State to support a congressional candidate.

“President Biden, are you going to announce that the JCPOA is dead? Can you announce it?’ a woman is heard asking, shaking his hand.

“She’s dead, but we won’t announce it. It’s a long story,” he replies.

“We don’t want an agreement with the mullahs (…) They don’t represent us,” continues his interlocutor.

“I know they don’t represent you. But they’re going to get a nuclear weapon,” Biden is heard saying.

“The president’s comments are absolutely consistent with what we’ve been saying about the JCPOA, which is not our priority right now,” John Kirby, the White House National Security Council spokesman, said when asked about the issue by reporters. . “We don’t expect an agreement to be reached in the near future,” he continued, without repeating that the JCPOA is “dead.”

“As far as I know, no one is questioning the authenticity (of the video) and I don’t believe we will investigate it,” he added.

The 2015 JCPOA offered Iran an easing of international sanctions in exchange for assurances from Tehran that it would not acquire a nuclear weapon. Iranian authorities insist that they never had such a goal and that their nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes.

After the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018 and the reimposition of US sanctions, Tehran gradually stopped complying with its obligations.

Biden has promised to try to revive the agreement, but negotiations that began in April 2021 in Vienna are currently deadlocked.
