The Peruvian government on Tuesday declared the Mexican ambassador, Pablo Monroi, persona non grata (“unwanted person”), giving him 72 hours to leave the country, Foreign Minister Ana Cecilia Hervasi announced.
At the same time, Mrs. Hervasi informed that the government under President Dina Boluarte gave the green light for the safe passage of the wife of former President Pedro Castillo, who was granted political asylum in Mexico earlier yesterday.
Lilia Paredes, the educator and former first lady of Peru, is facing corruption investigations, as is her husband.
Earlier yesterday, the Mexican government announced that it had decided to grant political asylum to Ms. Paredes, two of Mr. Castillo’s children, as well as his younger sister.
The Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard clarified that persons who were granted asylum “are in our embassy” in Lima. He did not specify how many or which ones.
Mr. Castillo himself was arrested by his own bodyguards on December 7, after his suspension from Congress, as he tried to reach the Mexican embassy to seek asylum.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said a few days ago that he is keeping “the door open” for the former Peruvian head of state, who has been ordered to remain in custody until 2024, as he is being investigated for “stance” and “conspiracy”.
