Authorities in Costa Rica have seized some 3.2 tons of cannabis transported by speedboats dedicated to this purpose, which were intercepted in the Pacific Ocean, they announced Tuesday.
Two anti-drug operations led to the seizure of 3,250 kilograms of cannabis and the arrest of four Nicaraguan nationals in the first and three Colombian nationals in the second, the Public Security Ministry said.
The vessels were moving at high speed, without flag or name, when they were intercepted by the Costa Rican coast guard.
The first was intercepted near the southern coast, about 300 kilometers from the capital San Jose. The second about three hours later, a few kilometers away.
Each was carrying 1,625 kilograms of drugs, the police’s narcotics department said.
In 2021, Costa Rican authorities announced that they were able to seize 71 tons of drugs — mostly cocaine and cannabis. In the same year, drug seizures in Central America totaled 248 tons, according to AFP calculations based on authorities’ announcements.
