Medvedev said he and Xi discussed the “borderless” Russia-China strategic partnership, as well as Ukraine
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev made a surprise visit to Beijing and held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in which he said they discussed the conflict in Ukraine.
Medvedev, who is now vice-chairman of Russia’s Security Council, posted videos and photos on his Telegram account showing him meeting Xi and smiling.
He even stated that he and Xi discussed the “borderless” strategic partnership between Russia and China, as well as Ukraine. The vice president of the Russian Security Council did not elaborate.
“We discussed cooperation between the two ruling parties of China and Russia (…) bilateral cooperation within our strategic partnership, including economy and industrial production. We also discussed international issues – including of course the conflict in Ukraine,” the Russian official said.
“The talks were constructive,” he added.
Russia has increasingly aligned itself with Beijing after being hit by a series of Western sanctions imposed as punishment for its February invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a “special military operation”.
Russia is seeking to develop closer economic, political and security ties with China to compensate for the loss of relations it had with the West and sees Xi as a potential ally in an anti-Western coalition.
