In his annual year-end blog post “Gates Notes”The Bill Gates he usually takes stock and reports on the Gates Foundation.
However, in the 2022 update, Gates also addressed more personal issues, including his 2021 divorce from Melinda Franz Gates, while explaining why he will “fall” off the list of the world’s richest people.
“I turned 67 in October. It’s hard to believe I’m so old. In America, most people my age are retired!” he began his blog post.
The current billionaire then went on to explain why he might not be on the world’s richest list anytime soon. “Although I don’t care if I’m on the list of the richest people in the world,” he wrote, “I know that as I get better at giving, I’ll fall down and eventually drop off the list altogether.”
Gates then revealed that becoming a grandfather in the new year is changing his perspective. “I began to see the world through a different lens when my oldest daughter gave me the incredible news that I was going to be a grandfather,” Gates wrote.
Gates’ eldest daughter Jennifer, 26, is expecting her first child with husband Nayel Nassar and announced the news on Thanksgiving.
He continued: “Just typing that phrase, ‘I’m going to be a grandfather next year,’ makes me emotional. And this thought gives a new dimension to my work. When I think about the world my grandchild will be born into, I am more inspired than ever to help all of our children and grandchildren have a chance to survive and thrive.”
He then commented on his own life: “Because of my position, I am isolated from many difficulties. However, I too have had a hard time in recent years. I was shocked by the death of my father and the end of my marriage.”
Gates thanked his friends and family for supporting him through his difficult times. “Being rich makes my life much more comfortable, but not more fulfilling. That’s why I need family, friends, and a job where I work on things that matter. I’m grateful to have all three,” he added.
