China – Covid: Thousands of deaths every day – A Shanghai hospital warns of a “tragic battle”.

At least 5,000 people die every day in China but the deaths go unreported – “All of us, all of our patients will be infected! We have no choice, we cannot escape,” Shanghai Deji Hospital announced

Thousands of people have been dying every day in China since the government eased containment measures and lockdowns about three weeks ago.

Beijing does not officially announce deaths, but funeral home workers say demand for their services has surged in the past week, with more than 5,000 people likely to die each day from Covid-19 in China, according to British research firm Airfinity.

In fact, Airfinity said its mortality risk analysis suggests that 1.3 million to 2.1 million people may die in the current coronavirus outbreak in China. Analyzes based on other models also predict as many as 2.1 million deaths.

As coronavirus sweeps China, largely unchecked and facing a bleak future, a Shanghai hospital has told staff to brace for a “tragic battle” as it expects half of the city’s 25 million residents to be infected by the end of year.

Shanghai Deji Hospital, in a post on the WeChat platform late yesterday, estimated that there are 5.43 million Covid-positive citizens in the city and that 12.5 million residents in China’s main commercial hub will be infected by the end of the year .

“This year’s Christmas Eve, New Year and Lunar New Year will be fatally unsafe,” the hospital said. “In this tragic battle, all of Greater Shanghai will fall, and all of us will infect the hospital staff! We will infect the whole family! All our patients will be infected! We have no other choice and we cannot escape.”

The post was (as expected) no longer available on WeChat this afternoon (local time).

However, China reported no new deaths due to complications from Covid for the second consecutive day on December 21 while it has confirmed just 389,306 cases with symptoms.

Also, China’s official death toll since the pandemic began three years ago is 5,241 – a fraction of what most countries are facing.
