Taliban: Women did not wear hijab in universities, so we banned them from studying!

“These female students who went to the university (…) did not follow the instructions for the hijab (i.e. the headscarf that covers the head and neck). Hijab is compulsory in Islam,” said Neda Mohammad Nadeem

The Afghan women they were forbidden to attend universities because… “they didn’t follow the dress code,” the Taliban’s minister of higher education claimed on Thursday, speaking on state television.

“These female students who went to the university (…) did not follow the instructions for the hijab (i.e. the headscarf that covers the head and neck). Hijab is compulsory in Islam,” said Neda Mohammad Nadeem.

Also according to the minister, the girls studying in provinces far from their residence “were not accompanied in their movements by a mahram”, an adult male relative. “Our Afghan honor does not allow a young Muslim woman to be found in a distant province without her father, brother or husband,’ he added.

The minister also asserted that “discussions” around the issue of girls’ education continue and that the Taliban respect women’s rights “according to sharia,” Islamic law.

On Tuesday night, in a laconic letter, Nadeem ordered all universities, public and private, to bar female students from attending classes “until further notice,” without giving an explanation.

This decision caused an outcry all over the world. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken accused the Taliban of trying to condemn Afghan women “to a dark future of no opportunity” by banning them from attending universities.

Speaking at a news conference, Blinken said the Taliban government will fail in its efforts to improve relations with the rest of the world unless the militants lift the ban.

“There will be a cost if it is not lifted,” he said, referring to the ban on the Taliban regime announced on Tuesday.

German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock said in a statement on behalf of the G7 that gender-based persecution could amount to a crime against humanity.
