The mercury in some areas could drop as much as 15 degrees below normal for the season

THE US President Joe Biden warned Americans today that “dangerous and threatening” storms are expected in several parts of the country in the next 48 hours, advising those planning to travel to visit family and friends to leave immediately.

“These are dangerous and threatening, really severe storms from Oklahoma to Wyoming and Maine … So I urge everyone to take local warnings seriously,” President Biden said. “If you plan to travel, leave now! It’s not funny!”, he emphasized and added that he gave permission to members of the White House staff to leave earlier for their Christmas destinations.

The wave of severe weather is expected to bring blizzard conditions to the Great Lakes region, rain followed by freezing temperatures on the East Coast, wind gusts of 100 km/h and bitter cold even as far south as the Mexican border.

The mercury in some areas could drop as much as 15 degrees below normal for the season, forecasters warn.

Nearly 2,000 flights scheduled for the next 48 hours have been canceled, including 700 to Chicago. Hundreds of flights were also canceled in Denver where the first snow has already fallen and the temperature has dropped to very low levels.

Authorities in Ohio and Tennessee warned drivers that wet roads are expected to turn into ice rinks due to the sharp drop in temperatures.

North Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia have declared states of emergency. “We’re expecting weather that we haven’t seen in at least a decade,” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said.
