US-Russia relations have sunk to their lowest level in decades as a result of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine

Russia’s ambassador to the US today compared the state of US-Russia relations to the “Ice Age” and said the risk of conflict between the two countries is “high”, Russian state news agency TASS reported.

According to TASS, Anatoly Antonov said it was difficult to say when the strategic dialogue talks between the two sides might resume, but added that the prisoner exchange talks had been “effective” and would continue.

US-Russia relations have sunk to their lowest level in decades as a result of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine and subsequent Western sanctions.

The two prisoner swaps — in which former U.S. Marine Trevor Reed and basketball star Brittney Greiner were released by Russia in exchange for the release of convicted Russian drug trafficker Konstantin Yaroshenko and arms dealer Victor Butt — are two rare cases of success in US-Russia diplomacy in 2022.
