The president of the Italian Council of State and former foreign minister Franco Frattini in the Berlusconi governments has passed away at the age of 65, after a battle with cancer.
Frattini breathed his last on Saturday night at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, as Rai reports.
He had served as Minister of Foreign Affairs (2002-2004 and 2008-2011) and Minister of Public Administration (1995-1996 and 2001-2002), while from 2004 to 2008 he was Commissioner for Justice during the Barroso presidency in the Commission.
Former Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi expressed his sadness for the loss of Franco Frattini on Instagram, emphasizing that he served the citizens faithfully from whatever position he was assigned. “I will always remember his great ability to face complex problems with a smile, being comfortable in any role and the respect he had earned. I will miss him, as will those who were lucky enough to be able to work with him,” said Berlusconi.
