The Air Ballon pub in Birdlip, Gloucestershire, will serve its last customers on New Year’s Eve

The Air Ballon pub in Birdlip, Gloucestershire, will serve its last customers on New Year’s Eve.

The historic pub will close for good on 1 January 2023, after 220 years of continuous operation, as it will be demolished to accommodate road widening in the area.

“It has been our pleasure serving you all these years but sadly the time has come for the pub to close to make way for the new road. As you can understand this is a difficult time but we look forward to giving you all one last wonderful Christmas for remember us’ the staff said on Facebook and British social media was flooded with messages of love and nostalgia.

The pub was named the Air Balloon because Birdlip and Crickley Hill were popular launch sites for hot air balloons when they first appeared and became popular in England in the 1780s.

Air Ballon is a landmark for the wider area – it even gave its name to a roundabout that joins major local roads.
