Twenty missing persons are still being sought
A landslide on the slopes of a river killed one person and three others were reported missing in the southern Philippines, raising the death toll from floods in the Philippines to 33.
According to the police, four people who were fishing yesterday in a river in Davao Oriental province, Mindanao island, were crushed when the place where they were was hit by a landslide.
The body of a 62-year-old man has been recovered and investigations are underway to identify three other people, Mati police chief Ernesto Gregore told AFP.
In the meantime, searches continue to locate twenty people who are missing after the floods and landslides that occurred last weekend.
Across the country, they were destroyed hundreds of houses and over 50,000 acres crops while tens of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes, according to the national disaster agency.
Most of the victims were in province of Misamis Occidental, in the island of Mindanao, where at least fifteen people were lost, most of them drowned, the agency said. The remaining victims were in seven more provinces.
The Philippines is among the countries of the world that featuremore vulnerable to the consequences of climate change. Scientists warn that the storms that hit the archipelago every year will become increasingly fierce as the temperature of the planet rises.
