Kyiv: 16 missiles aimed at the capital were shot down, Ukrainians announced
Ukrainian air defense managed to shoot down all 16 Russian missiles that targeted the capital Kyiv today, the head of the city’s military administration assured.
“Sixteen missiles were spotted over Kyiv, all 16 were shot down,” Serhi Popko announced via the Telegram application.
“Shards of the downed rockets damaged three houses and a car in the Darnytskyi district, an industrial enterprise in the Golosiivskyi district and a playground in the Pecherskyi district. Three people were injured and are being treated,” he added, however.
Explosions in Kyiv, Odessa and Zhytomyr
Ukraine reported a new Russian missile attack this morning as explosions rang out in cities, which authorities said were caused by air defense systems shooting down incoming missiles.
Presidential adviser Oleksii Arestovich wrote on Facebook that more than 100 missiles were coming in waves and air raid sirens were being heard across the country.
Explosions were heard in Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Odesa, according to a Reuters correspondent and local media reports.
Power outages were announced in the Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk regions, with the aim of minimizing potential damage to the energy infrastructure.
What the mayors of the cities report
Mayors in eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv, the capital Kyiv and the western city of Lviv said Russian missiles had hit their cities and set off a series of explosions.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said officials were clarifying what had been hit and whether there were any casualties, while Kyiv Mayor Volodymyr Klitschko warned of possible power outages and asked residents to charge their phones.
“Two houses in the Darnytsky district were damaged by fragments of downed rockets,” Kyiv’s military command said via the Telegram app.
According to the same source, a business and a children’s playground were also damaged and the condition of the victims “is being clarified”.
The mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sandovii, said that 90% of the city is without electricity and electric transportation is not working.
“There may be interruptions in water supply,” he added in a post on Telegram.
