US House releases Trump tax returns

by

A committee of the Democrat-controlled US House of Representatives on Friday released six years of tax returns from former President Donald Trump. The publication comes days before the Republicans took control of the House.

Details previously released by the agency showed that Trump did not pay income taxes in 2020, his last full year in office, despite making millions of dollars in the period. In addition, a survey by The New York Times indicates that the Republican failed to pay federal taxes in 11 of the 18 years analyzed.

Records show that Trump’s income and tax liabilities fluctuated dramatically from 2015 to 2020, between his first presidential candidacy and the end of his term. They also show that Trump and his wife, Melania, claimed large deductions and losses and paid little or no income tax in several of those years.

The release of Trump’s remarks ends a multi-year battle between the former Republican president and Democratic lawmakers. Unlike predecessors in office, Trump has always refused to make his tax documents available, claiming that they are private information. Democrats, on the other hand, allege that the information is needed as part of a program by the US Internal Revenue Service to audit the income statements of the country’s presidents.

The issue was resolved last month by the country’s Supreme Court, after the court denied a request by the Republican that Congress not have access to his statements.

Recently, Trump launched his presidential candidacy in the 2024 election. He continues to maintain great influence in the Republican Party and, according to opinion polls, is the favorite to win the caption primaries.
