The far-right president will not attend the swearing-in ceremony of Luis Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday
The president of Brazil Zach Bolsonaro left the country today for the US, two days before the end of his term and the inauguration of his successor in Brasilia, several media reported.
The far-right president will not attend Sunday’s swearing-in ceremony for Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, to whom he should, according to protocol, hand over the presidential tape.
When asked by AFP, a spokesman for the presidency declined to comment.
After saying goodbye to his supporters online, but without making any mention of his departure, Bolsonaro boarded an air force plane at around 19:00 (Greece time), O Globo, CNN Brasil, Estadao and UOL reported.
“I’m flying, I’ll be back soon,” he told the TV channel CNN Brasil.
A motorcade left Alvorada’s official presidential residence earlier, said an AFP photojournalist who was unable to confirm whether Bolsonaro was in any of the vehicles.
According to today’s Government Gazette, the general secretariat of the presidency approved the departure of members of the “future former president’s” security staff from the country for a trip to Miami “from January 1 to January 30, 2023.”
This will be the first time since 1985 that an outgoing president does not hand over the symbols of the presidency to his successor. That year, the last president of the military dictatorship (1964-85), General Joao Figueiredo, refused to participate in the swearing-in of his successor, José Sarney.
After the election victory of Lula, whom he never congratulated, Bolsonaro secluded himself in Brasilia and avoided statements.
