Among the first places in the world to welcome 2023 was the Kiritimati Island in the Pacific Oceanwhile Auckland, New Zealand became the first major city in the world to kick off New Year’s celebrations with fireworks from the Sky Tower.

And Sydney, Australia is now in 2023 with fireworks lighting up its skies over the harbor bridge and opera house.

This was the first unrestricted New Year in two years for Sydneysiders. The lockdown at the end of 2020 and the outbreak of the Omicron variant at the end of 2021 had prompted Australian authorities to impose restrictions on celebrations. Now the measures have been lifted, while the country has opened its borders.

It is estimated that more than a million people gathered in the city’s harbor to watch the show with tens of thousands of fireworks. City officials estimate that half a billion people watched the spectacle via the Internet or television.

The New Year has already been welcomed by the people of Queensland and Brisbane, Australia, while in Darwin, the capital and largest city of the Northern Territory, the New Year’s fireworks event was canceled due to strong winds and rainfall in the region.

Asia is another stop for the New Year that is making its way around the globe with Japan and South Korea’s capital, Seoul, having already left 2022 behind.
