The European Commission has issued two funding decisions, amounting to € 560 million, to support inclusive quality education for refugees in Turkey and access to higher education, as well as immigration and border protection.
The € 560 million is part of an additional € 3 billion announced by President Ursula von der Leyen in June 2021 for the continuation of EU aid to refugees in Turkey for the period 2021-2023.
Neighborhood and Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varchelli said: “This new funding for refugees and host communities in Turkey shows that the European Union continues to live up to its commitments. It will ensure that hundreds of thousands of refugee children can continue to go to school and receive quality education, which is the key to securing future job prospects. “We will also provide funding to the Authorities to address the migration challenges and increase border protection, especially in view of the evolving situation on Turkey’s eastern border.”
The first measure, worth 530m euros, will support quality co-education for refugees in Turkey and access to higher education, in particular through scholarships. The second funding decision provides € 30 million to support and address the challenges of migration and borders: capacity building and improving standards and conditions for migrants in Turkey’s accommodation centers, as well as improvements in addressing issues related to immigration to Turkish airports.
In its statement, the Commission recalled that Turkey is hosting around 4 million refugees, the largest refugee community in the world. This includes 3.6 million registered Syrian refugees and 370,000 registered refugees from other countries.
