In the final hours of 2022, a British man achieved a lofty goal he had set for the year: to raise £1m for the fight against cancer by running 365 marathons in 365 days.
53-year-old Gary Mackey ran his 365th marathon of the year — 15,330 kilometers — in the rain yesterday, while he was greeted by a small crowd of supporters near his home.
However, the father-of-three, who lives in Cleator Moor, north-west England, didn’t reach his financial goal until hours later when he reached £1m (€1.13m) for the Macmillan charity Cancer Support.
Maki changed into 22 pairs of sneakers and ran through rain, snow and sunshine.
This is not the first time Maki has raced for charity as he has already cycled across Brazil, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and rowed distances equivalent to the English Channel. He had run 100 marathons in 100 days in 2017 and 110 in 110 days in 2021.
