Three lionesses from a zoo in Ukraine have found a new home in a Danish wildlife park.
Safari Park Knuteborg received the animals from Kharkiv province just before Christmas, according to a joint announcement by the animal welfare organization Dyrenes Beskyttelse.
Because of the war in Ukraine, the lionesses were already removed from the Fieldham Ecopark near the Ukrainian-Russian border in August. They were temporarily housed in a zoo in Poland.
Biologist Ane Sophie Milvang from Dyrenes Beskyttelse said she was very happy that the complicated and dangerous removal of the animals from Ukraine ended successfully. “The smaller zoo was in the middle of a war zone and the lionesses were at risk of malnutrition.”
In Denmark, the lionesses have their own space in the large tiger enclosure at Knuteborg. According to the Safari Park, this is the first time that lions have lived permanently in Knuteborg.
