Two Iranians under the age of 20 are at risk of execution in their country after being sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement in the protests that erupted over the death of a young Kurdish woman, an overseas-based non-governmental organization said today.
Iran has been rocked by anti-government protests that erupted over the September 16 death of Mahsha Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman, after she was arrested by morality police for violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code.
Authorities, which they say are “riots” orchestrated by foreign countries and opposition groups, have arrested thousands of people, including 11 who were sentenced to death. Activists estimate that this number is much higher. Three of them, one of whom is a Kurdish rapper, will be retried by decision of the Supreme Court.
Two men have already been executed by hanging after being found guilty of killing or injuring members of the security forces or paramilitaries in the protests.

A revolutionary court found him guilty of “corruption on earth” and of being an “enemy of God” (“mohareb” in Persian), according to its verdict. With this double charge, the accused is twice sentenced to death.
According to IHR director Mahmoud Amiri-Magadam, Mohammadifard appears to be the youngest person sentenced to death in connection with the protests.
At the same time, Mizan Online, the judiciary agency, reported that the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of another man involved in the protests, 19-year-old Mohamed Borogani, on December 6.
