Clarifications on the seriousness of the injury of the 16-year-old European champion in boxing, Vassilis Topalou, who died yesterday Monday (2/1), the Tzanio hospital, where the deceased young man was treated, gives in his announcement.
Specifically, the press release of Tzanios states:
“The patient T.B. was treated with the E.K.A.B. in the emergency department on 12/16/2022 in a comatose state after a reported fall. He was intubated and underwent a clinical and imaging examination, which revealed a severe brain injury. He underwent emergency surgery to remove an acute subdural hematoma and was then intubated at 6:40 p.m. in the ICU of the Hospital, in serious clinical condition and was immediately put on intensive anti-edema treatment to control the extensive cerebral edema.
Despite intensive medication and support of all his vital functions, the patient did not show clinical and imaging improvement during his hospitalization. His clinical picture and the imaging test showed continuous deterioration and finally the patient died on 01/02/2023 at 2:16 pm.”
The young European champion was injured during his regular training on Friday morning (16/12) in a gym in Kallithea.
The incident occurred during training when the 16-year-old athlete felt unwell and then fainted, causing him to fall and hit his head. He was immediately taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery.
