Deep tensions within the ranks of Republicans, who have secured a majority of seats in the US House of Representatives in the November 2022 midterm elections, have prevented the favorite, Kevin McCarthy, from taking office, succeeding outgoing Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi, after three votes.
The House of Representatives completed its first day of work yesterday Tuesday without succeeding in electing its president, something unprecedented in the last 100 years.
It is the first time since 1923 that a new president of the body is not elected from the first day. Back then, no fewer than nine votes were needed to elect Republican Frederick Gillette.
The body reconvenes today Wednesday at noon (local time; 19:00 Greek time) to try again.
Yesterday’s tensions did not surprise anyone, it is pointed out in a report of the Los Angeles Times newspaper which is relayed by the German Agency. Several conservative Republicans have signaled for weeks that they would oppose Mr. McCarthy. It is unclear whether the conflict can be resolved immediately.
The development marks a chaotic start to the term of the new lower house, delaying votes on the rules that will govern the operation of the 118th Congress and the swearing in of new members.
According to a report by the Reuters news agency, hard-line Republicans are promoting an alternative candidate, that of 58-year-old Jim Jordan, who represents Ohio and is a big supporter of Donald Trump, even though the person concerned supported Mr. McCarthy. Twenty Republicans voted for Mr. Jordan — less than a tenth of the number who voted for Kevin McCarthy, but it was enough.
