After three weeks of detention due to her open support for the protests in Iran and the global support she received from governments, celebrities and organizations, the famous Iranian actress Tarane Alidusti she was released today.

“My client was released today on bail,” her lawyer, Zahra Minoue, told Isna news agency.

Alidusti, 38, had been held in Tehran since December 17 after making several social media posts in which she supported the protests, mostly denouncing the execution of demonstrators, or in which she appeared to lift her headscarf.

Almost 500 personalities and workers from the cinema field, such as the French actress Marion Cotillard or the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, had requested in December in an open letter the immediate release of Alindusti.

Tarane Alidusti is known for her roles in films by director Asghar Faradi, including “The Merchant”, which won the Oscar for Foreign Language Film in 2017. She also starred in Said Rustagi’s film “Leila’s Brothers” which was presented at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Iran has been rocked by protests, which authorities are calling “riots”, following the death of teenager Mahsha Amini on September 16 while in custody for violating the Islamic dress code imposed on women in Iran.

Iranian officials say hundreds of people have been killed in the “riots,” including members of the security forces, and thousands more have been arrested.
