Dozens of anti-government protesters attempted to occupy an airport near Peru’s border with Bolivia on Friday, prompting Peruvian police to use tear gas to disperse them.
Protesters set fire to a police vehicle outside the Inca Manco Capac airport in Juliaca, Puno province, according to images shown by Peruvian television.
Peruvian media reported more than 15 injured, including two police officers. The health ministry did not confirm the tally.
The management of the airport of Chouliaka said that the operation was temporarily suspended “due to violent incidents and lack of security”.
In December, three airports in Peru were forced to temporarily suspend operations due to riots caused by anti-government protesters.
Anti-government protests broke out again on Wednesday after a lull of about two weeks. The participants are demanding the resignation of President Dina Bolluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the immediate calling of elections, already decided to be held early, in April 2024 instead of 2026.
Roadblocks have been reported in about 50 places in the territory. In the Ica region (south), protesters have blocked a main highway, causing traffic chaos.
During the riots that rocked Peru in December, following the ouster and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo, at least 22 people were killed and more than 600 injured.
