Ninety million cases of Covid in one province of China alone

by

Almost 90% of the residents of Henan, one of the most populous Chinese provinces in the country, have been infected with Covid-19

Nearly 90 percent of residents in Henan, one of China’s most populous provinces, have been infected with Covid-19, a regional health official said today, as the country faces an unprecedented surge in cases. .

In Henan (central China), China’s third most populous province, 89% of the population was infected with Covid-19 on January 6, Kan Chuansheng said.
Based on that rate, about 88.5 million people are said to have already contracted Covid, out of the province’s roughly 100 million inhabitants.

The number of medical visits for fever peaked on Dec. 19 and has been steadily declining in Henan since then, the official told reporters.

They “opened” the trips in view of the Chinese New Year

Despite the epidemiological jump, China lifted yesterday, Sunday, the obligation of quarantine for passengers arriving on its territory from abroad. However, there is still a requirement for PCR tests and tourist visas have remained suspended for almost three years.

After three years of restrictions that were among the world’s most draconian, China last month suddenly lifted most of its health measures against the coronavirus.

The number of patients has grown exponentially, while the health system is overwhelmed by elderly patients and crematoriums seem unable to cope with the influx of corpses.

Authorities expect a new wave of infections during the Lunar New Year (on January 22), as millions of urban Chinese travel to the countryside to celebrate with their families.

As the holidays approach, more than 34 million journeys had been announced for Saturday, the first day of China’s biggest travel of the year, according to official figures.

Only 30 deaths

China, which has a population of 1.4 billion, has recorded only 30 deaths from Covid since the lifting of health restrictions in December, despite the unprecedented wave of infections the country is facing.

The numbers do not reflect the situation, according to many World Health Organization experts.

China revised its criteria for counting Covid victims in December. From now on, only those who die directly from respiratory failure, linked to the coronavirus, are included in the statistics.

This change in methodology means that many deaths will no longer be recorded as being due to Covid.
