The investigation into the incident and the identification of the perpetrator is being conducted by the Lefkos Pyrgos police department.
The president of the Voluntary Ministry of the Homeless Kyriaki Fragou, in her statements to the Athenian/Macedonian News Agency, stated that the dispute took place over the sharing of food and that the 61-year-old accepted three stab wounds to the face, chest and abdomenwhile he is hospitalized, out of danger, at the “Papanikolou” hospital.
“Tasos is a peaceful homeless person, at least he is 5-6 years on the road, his haunt is in the White Tower, along with Dave and Telemachus. At dawn and while he was sleeping he was attacked for the little food he had in his possession. Bloodied, he himself called for help and was taken to the hospital. Fortunately, he is in good health, I spoke with him,” said Mrs. Fragou.
For her part, the deputy mayor for Social Policy of the municipality of Thessaloniki, Ioanna Kosmopoulou, stated that every 15-20 days the services record the locations and number of homeless people in the city and try to motivate them to leave the streets and find themselves in the existing structures, in Dormitory and at the Open Homeless Day Center.
“At “Alexandros”, as in the whole city, we make regular visits. There is a complete record of the signs, the homeless are 125 counted by name, with a network of people trying to motivate them to come to the municipality’s structures. Unfortunately, most of them refuse and don’t come,” Ms. Kosmopoulou added.
According to the responsible deputy mayor, the Homeless Dormitory has the capacity to accommodate 70 people and currently has 60 homeless people, which means that there is room, while in the Open Day Center for the Homeless, which operates from 9 am to 4:30 am afternoon and concerns the coverage of basic needs, on a daily basis it is visited by approximately 50-60 people.
