The premiers of Germany and the United Kingdom and spokespersons for Russia and China echoed this Monday (9) the criticisms of other world leaders of the coup attacks carried out in Brasilia this Sunday (8).
In a post on social media, German Olaf Scholz referred to the acts as “terrible images”. “Violent attacks against democratic institutions are an attack on democracy that cannot be tolerated,” wrote the prime minister, expressing “deep solidarity” with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the Brazilian people.
The British Rishi Sunak also offered the PT and his government “full support from the United Kingdom”. “I condemn any attempt to undermine the peaceful transfer of power and the democratic will of the Brazilian people,” tweeted the prime minister, adding that he is “looking forward to strengthening close ties” with Brazil in the coming years.
Russia also condemned the attacks and said it “fully supports” the Brazilian government. “We strongly condemn the actions of the riot instigators and fully support Brazilian President Lula da Silva,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov told reporters.
China, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said it “closely follows and firmly opposes the violent attack against the federal authorities”. Wang Wenbin, spokesman for diplomacy, also stated that Beijing “supports the measures taken by the Brazilian government to calm the situation, restore social order and preserve national stability”.
On Sunday, thousands of Bolsonaristas broke through police barriers and invaded Congress, the presidential palace and the Federal Supreme Court in BrasÃlia, breaking windows, vandalizing offices and destroying works of art.
Brazilian authorities quickly launched their investigations, with Lula vowing that coup plotters will be punished. “We believe that, under President Lula’s leadership, Brazil will maintain national stability and social harmony,” said Wang, referring to the country as Beijing’s “strategic partner”.
