Putin criticizes violence by Bolsonarists and supports Lula

by

The government of Vladimir Putin in Russia condemned this Monday (9) the acts of violence and depredation promoted by Bolsonarist activists in Brasília on Sunday.

“We strongly condemn the actions of the troublemakers and fully support Brazilian President Lula da Silva,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said in his daily briefing with reporters.

With that, Putin followed the position of his geopolitical rival Joe Biden, the American president who considered the depredation of the headquarters of the three Powers by Bolsonarists as “outrageous” on Sunday itself. Other Western leaders did the same.

Just before the second round, the Sheet questioned Putin in Moscow about how he saw the Brazilian electoral process. He was diplomatic, saying that he would maintain the good relationship with Brazil whether the winner was Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) or the then president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Behind the scenes, members of the Russian government said they preferred Bolsonaro’s victory because they considered him more manipulable and less experienced than Lula.

In practice, however, both Brazilian rivals maintained the same position in relation to the central theme for Russia, the War in Ukraine: both Lula and Bolsonaro were against the invasion, but maintained Brazilian neutrality by not supporting western sanctions against the Kremlin.
