“Democracy is weakening, a World War III is emerging”: Pope Francis’ warning

Pope Francis made these remarks during his annual address to accredited diplomats at the Vatican

“Democracy is weakening” was the warning of Pope Francis in the shadow of the riots in Brazil. “In many areas, an indication of the weakening of democracy is the increased political and social polarization, which does not help to solve the urgent problems of the citizens,” he stressed.

The emerging reality is a “third world war”, truly global in nature, “where the conflicts concern only certain areas of the planet directly, but in fact it concerns them all” and the Pope underlined a reference that seems to have something to do with Ukrainian.

Francis made the remarks during his annual address to accredited diplomats at the Vatican, in an overview of the situation around the world known informally as the “state of the world” address.

The Argentine pontiff said that “various countries of the Americas where political crises are laden with tensions and forms of violence that exacerbate social conflicts.” “I’ve been thinking these last few hours about Brazil,” he said.

Pope Francis Peru also reported, where nationwide protests have killed at least 22 people, and a “disturbing situation” in Haiti, where gang violence is ravaging the poverty-stricken country.

He spoke of “the war in Ukraine with its attendant death and destruction, with attacks on civilian infrastructure causing loss of life not only from gunfire and acts of violence, but also from hunger and sub-zero temperatures.”

He then immediately quoted a passage from the Vatican Constitution which states that any act of war aimed at the indiscriminate destruction of entire cities or vast areas with their inhabitants constitutes crime against God and humanity which demands a harsh and unquestionable condemnation.

“There is a constant need to overcome partisan ways of thinking and work to promote the common good,” he noted.
