“Just in the last 15 years, we’ve spent billions of dollars in the hemisphere, tens of billions of dollars,” countered the US president
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador urged his US counterpart Joe Biden on Monday to end “the oblivion, the abandonment, the contempt towards Latin America and the Caribbean”.
“President Biden, you have in your hands the key” that will allow “to substantially improve relations between all the countries of the American continent,” Mr. López Obrador told Mr. Biden at the prelude to their bilateral meeting.
“It is time to end the oblivion, the abandonment, the contempt for Latin America and the Caribbean, which are contrary to the good neighborly policy of the titan of freedom that was (US former) President Franklin Delano Roosevelt,” added Mr. López Obrador in the part of the meeting that was open to the press.
“Just in the last 15 years, we’ve spent billions of dollars in the hemisphere, tens of billions of dollars,” countered the US president, according to which “the US gives more aid than any other country” to states in the region.
“Unfortunately, our responsibility is not limited to the Western Hemisphere,” Mr. Biden continued, referring to American commitments “in central Europe, in Asia, in Africa.”
Two years into his term, Mr. Biden is making his first official visit to neighboring Mexico, a major US economic and security partner, especially on issues of immigration and the fight against drugs.
The two presidents’ bilateral talks are expanding today, they will include Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the “10th North American Leaders’ Summit.”
The Mexican president has repeatedly said that he wants his US counterpart to increase investment in the countries of origin of irregular migrants who pass through Mexican territory to reach the “American dream” (mainly in Central American countries, as well as in Venezuela , in Cuba, in Haiti…).
The White House said in a press release released after the meeting that the two presidents reiterated their commitment to use “innovative approaches” to address the problem of irregular immigration, particularly to eliminate the “root causes” of the phenomenon.
