Georgia Meloni in the Vatican – She met with Pope Francis “in a cordial atmosphere”

“I admit that I don’t always understand Pope Francis,” Meloni wrote in an autobiography in 2021

The Prime Minister of Italy Georgia Meloniaccompanied by her partner Andrea Jabruno and their 6-year-old daughter Ginevra, visited the Vatican today where he had a meeting “in a cordial atmosphere” with Pope Francis.

Meloni, who in October headed the most right-wing government in Italy’s post-war history, is a conservative Catholic. She has described herself as a “mother”, “Italian” and “Christian”. He has come out against abortion, while being skeptical of campaigns for the rights of the LGBTI+ community.

“It was a great honor and I felt moved to have the opportunity to speak with the Holy Father about the great issues of our time,” the Italian prime minister wrote in a post on Twitter.

Of course, there are certain issues, such as immigration, on which the Italian prime minister and the head of the Roman Catholic Church have different opinions. Pope Francis strongly defends the rights of refugees and immigrants, while Georgia Meloni favors strict immigration management.

“I admit that I don’t always understand Pope Francis,” Meloni wrote in an autobiography in 2021, in which she expressed her preference for Pope John Paul II. But he emphasized that he wanted “one day” to meet Pope Francis, as “his big eyes and his straight speech might give meaning to what I cannot understand”.

The meeting with the pontiff lasted about 35 minutes. Afterwards, Meloni had talks with the Prime Minister of the Holy See Pietro Parolin and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Paul Richard Gallagher.

The talks covered social issues, tackling poverty and the demographic crisis, the war in Ukraine and immigration, according to a press release from the Holy See.
